Dowry in Marriages

Dowry is a very controversial aspect of a marriage. Dowry comprises the gifts, cash, valuable items, furniture , jewellery and other important items that a girl receives as a gift from her parents and relatives. Since in India the girl does not have any ancestral rights to parental property the dowry is given to girl as "streedhan" by her parents.

The custom of dowry has been misused by the family of the groom in India. In most cases the boy's family keeps too high demands for dowry, which is used by the boys family for their own use.
The demand for dowry often continues even after marriage and has caused too many marital disputes.
